Lee Baker and Catherine Borowski of Graphic Rewilding have captured people’s imaginations with gigantic floral artworks that appear as murals and stained glass, on sculpture trails, buildings and benches, and even as mini golf courses.

Why? Because so many people lack “adequate access to green spaces,” says Lee, yet “even the simple act of viewing pictures of nature can enhance mental wellbeing,” scientifically proven in hospital waiting rooms where “people who have images of nature around them are less stressed,” he says.

The duo explain why they feature the flowers they do, including these Red Hot Pokers they shared on Instagram that represent resilience:

“The fiery vibrant red and orange of the Red Hot Poker flowers and the overall environment symbolise intense energy, vitality, focus and determination. The nasturtiums, which are known for their ability to grow in all kinds of conditions, represent the ability to overcome challenges, while also having medicinal detoxifying qualities which signifies the enhanced well being and health benefits of exercise.” ~ Graphic Rewilding

Lee shares his captivating story about why he and Catherine started Graphic Rewilding, revealing in the past, he suffered from depression and anxiety and at one time “couldn’t get out of bed, too frightened to face the world”. Drawing images of nature and being among it helped him recover, and he learned about “the extinction of experience where people who don’t have much exposure to nature start to lose a grasp of an empathy for nature itself,” especially those in urban environments like the North London council estate where Catherine grew up, he says. Producing vibrant, awe-inspiring artworks together, the artists saw people take great positivity and joy from their work, which has now taken them all around the world in an explosion of colour.
