Years ago, WWE wrestler John Cena broke his pocket watch, but he keeps it with him today. He has a watch to tell the time and the pocket watch is separate.

It “tells perspective,” he says in an interview with Jeff Goldblum, because John wasn’t always a confident speaker. He used to feel uncomfortable in a room full of people and think he wasn’t enough, so he’s had the pocket watch engraved on both sides.

Side 1 reads: “Comparison is the thief of joy”

John looks at this when he feels uncomfortable or “of low self worth” and it reminds him he’s “worthy of love”.

Side 2 reads: “Memento mori” (‘remember you must die’)

John says he looks at this side “when my head gets too big”. The saying reminds him “I’m human and above no-one,” and that we all have support from others along the way.

“It’s a nice little keeper of perspective,” he says, for when you’re feeling like you’re not enough.
